Guess what, they ditched the baby business for pizza delivery! I’m thinking probably the former isn’t really the thriving “industry” as it was in Singapore way back when each child actually had siblings to clown around with (and get hand-me-down stuff… argh!). A nation fast becoming one of workaholics and money-chasers who’d rather spend their days as swinging bachelors and ageing bachelorettes pass their bio clock, than to settle down and raise a family to call your own (don’t forget Grandma and Granpa!). Ok maybe we’ve not found our Mr/Ms Right just yet. Or for the ladies, our own MR BIG (which I gladly compensate for shoes teehee). So forget couples, we now deliver pizzas to the CBD!!

Out of Biznez!!

Ok so no pelican delivery of ANYTHING, just a pizza place named after a stork… which actually gives a nice ring & rhyme to it. I gotta say, it’s probably one of the best tasting pizzas ive tasted, and the cheapest one to boot! I first got to know of Pelican pizza as an NTU hostelite, whose food choices are limited to Canteen A and JP. And when the tummy growls and grumbles late at night, what’s there to do but call for doorstep delivery right? Sarpino was usually the choice of pizza, being the second most affordable to Pelican. Plus, the latter didn’t really look quite that appealing on paper. But when you had one too many of the same kind, it’s about time for something different.

Like a smart consumer (at least I’d like to think that I am haha), I did my research online and surprisingly, reviews were mostly raves than rants. I did notice though, fewer pizza choices reduced to basic ones. No fancy schmancy pizzas here, just back to basics. Don’t be fooled though, by the lack of visual appeal or care put into the website, or the less-than-appealing pizza pamphlet that you would rather use as a temporary mouse pad (it works). I'm guessing the lack of investment in the aesthetic department actually favours customers to save a pocketful. As advertising isn’t one of their top priorities, we wouldn’t have to fork out as much to pay for the brand. Think of it, we are actually paying for what we want. WOW…

If you dont really fancy 1001 toppings on your pizza and simply contented with essential ingredients, then this is the pizza hut – woops I meant place - for you. NO frills, just good ol’ tasting pizzas. It also saves you endless pondering and squabbling over which pizzas to get. Too many options is sometimes a hassle, no?

The chicken mayo is my family’s favourite, although i've yet to try all pizzas from their menu. The chicken comes in chunks of tender meat, and boy are they generous with their mozzie cheese! Meat lover, like what the name implies, is recommended for carnivores. It still goes if you’re not a fan, as the taste is not too overwhelming on the palette. But if you rather not devour that much meat, pelican pizza is flexible enough to allow a personalisation to pizza. Just don’t be afraid to ASK! The crust comes in a standard size, which is not too thick -like you know where- neither is it too thin. Fluffy and crispy at the same time, it might just convert crust-haters to crust-eaters! Pizzas come only in 2 sizes, regular priced at $23.90 and large $31.90.

Chicken mayo with loads of mozarellaa.. likey!! A pizza this good deserves a FLASH!!

Meat Lover's.. or Meat OVERLOAD? Oven-baked chicken wings just made the cut, pizza hut drumlets still the one to beat. Don’t miss their garlic bread though, which is really buttery and loaded with garlic spread.

A dash of chilli hot sauce, microwave for a bit and BAM!! Cheese taste so much better melted, also gives you that stringy effect!!

They may not employ big and bold adverts to sell, but word of mouth (or the blog) is a good start in getting more curious taste-testers to secure a loyal fan base. They got me already! So the next time you’re dialling for pizza, why not try something besides that usual order? It wouldn’t hurt to try, as pelican pizzas goes for 1-for-1, delivery is free AND it’s dirt cheap (ok lah can make it). Right from the pelican’s mouth.

Sounds AWFULLY familiar, dont it??

View their very simple website here: Pelican Pizza

Coffee Bean goes halal

It was some months ago that Linda told me a friend of hers, an employee at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf mentioned the café getting THE cert anytime soon. The cakes (delectable I might add), he added, were not a problem as they do not contain alcohol since 4 years ago.

And get this, Coffee Bean is the actual pioneer behind the clever concept of ice-blended drink, only the rave in any café. And what’s up with those drop-it-like-its-HOT RED lips?? Omg WHAT shade of lipstick is that? His lips are bleeding more red than a vampire’s sucking. Wrong analogy? Whatever haha.

Something like this, sans fangs and much less bling

So here’s my review of the Final 2 performances:

1st round: Heard the song b4, predictable sound from Big D. Just olraight I guess. For lil’D an even famous song, Elton John’s mind you.. SO blatantly obvious that Clive Davis has his eyes set on lil’D, him giving that kid a standing ovation was for everyone to witness… not fair I say!! Although I hate to say that it does take guts and a heck of a big voice to pull off a well-known song, so david archuleta, the sun definitely ain’t gonna go down on you for this one.

Ding ding ding! Round 1 goes to the corner in blue!

2nd round: Wow thats OST material right there!! But not to sure whether that constitutes a compliment for Cook though. Archekins went with an oh-so inspiring song, no surprise there and so leaves round 2 sort of like a warm-up round for the big finale… and for viewers to get a quickie at the loo.

-- IT’S A DRAW! --

3rd round: Simon’s right to say that Cook would have stood a better chance with Billie jean, Hello or even Always be my baby.. and get everyone wanting to have his haha. But David did have a good point in that, why do smth he’s done before? Like I never thought of such reasoning and was glad he chose to hold his ground and stood up for what he believes in the ethics of performing. BUT for the record, he did understand what SImon was trying to point out hehe..

Let it out brother… let it ALL out…..

I just like posting his pics, that’s all :D

Hmm, Archie my dear boy, you made me fall in love with your voice all over. The last song sent me on a trip back to the audition days, reminiscing the moment where he pulled my (and im sure many MANY other) heartstrings with his emotionally-packed, heart-tugging, warmth-inducing rendition of Bryan Adam’s Heaven. Oh im thinking about our younger years… God im getting old.

Look into my dreamy eyes…. when I say vote… Dial IDOL-01 and VOTE!

With 2 rounds against the Rocker, and if the judges comments are anything to go by, the Belter gets the better hand at bagging the tilte thanks to wise song choices showcasing one heck of a voice. You could really tell Simon was rooting for the former and how Cook lost him as the show progressed. Couldn’t even be bothered to watch Cook (utterly rude btw!!!) waste his last song on an entirely new one., but hey, that’s his prerogative.

Chicks dig guitars and the bad boy image don’t they?? Yeah this goes to all you single laydees out there… coz (where’s the camera??) YES im as single as can get!!

But whatever the outcome, there’s no doubt about them deserving to clinch the top two spots. NEVER in the bottom 3 yo! Doesn’t really matter who gets the title, Song BMG record deal, fame and fortune, all the girls.. ok maybe after a couple of months of sulking and whimpering trying to get over the lost and what could’ve been his. Just look at Draughtry now and.. Ruben… huh ruben whoo?? My point exactly. And can someone please pass him a towel… a super-soaker while you’re at it!!

Man this guy is awesome… No you’re too nice, consistently nice! And of course with so many interesting shows on tv, how else would you rather spend your last morsel of a weekend before monday blues sets in right? I’m talking about unheard of sunday noon movies that really is a time filler more than anything, and reruns of programme that you might have missed the first time... intentionally.

So there I layed on the bed (lazy ass bum right, can’t even sit while watching tv) switching channels countless times over until I finally settled on a programme on Suria miffing teenagers, or so the title implies. Like seriously, Ish remaja?? Isshhh you grown-up adults you!! Oh what a minute, I AM one of them. Ish ish ish.

Anyway… the topic at hand were hobbies these punksters are getting involved in these days compared to the days of occupying the only decent sitting place at the void deck only to strum the heartstrings away. God, isn’t that the kind of stereotypically comments that never fails to irk you, only to realise that it’s kinda sad that we never seem to outgrow our ways of such narrowed thinking? It’s one thing to associate “typical behaviour” to race, but to talk about it as normality? I mean I can’t say I’m not guilty of indulging in clichéd remarks, but it’s beneficial when it’s used as a talking point for a thinking dialogue.

Then again, to think of it, it’s only natural that we have such a mentality when we are brought up in a society which takes no heed in such issues, simply choosing to ignore and brush under the rug.

They think coz it’s a sensitive topic, it shouldn’t be brought to light.. Yes, thou shall not speakth of.. Boy do we need education in our classrooms.. and fast. While it may be tad too late to reverse such thinking of normality, it is never too late nor impossible to educate the generation after a thing or two, so they can in turn bring some positive change in the society they call their own. Be the change you want to see in the world, Gandhi once said. Ok so maybe AED101 wasn’t all that bad a module after all :p

Ok so what the heck where was i? OH yeah, lazy sunday noons and the case of bad reruns!! Ok maybe not as bad when it gives you something to think about. Like when a question was posed as to whether having a hobby would deter kids from getting themselves involved in the wrong things and hence contribute to gejala-gejala sosial (society’s problems). So what, you’re tryna say that no hobby = free time = no focus = will try anything for the thrill of it = teeming case of teen delinquents? So if you ain’t got no hobby, you’ll be doomed to a life of felony?

I was like, WHAT?? I happen to have a lot of free time but I don’t go around sniffing for pleasurable highs and shoplifting lipglosses!! I think teens are missing the point here.. It’s not really having nothing to do that compels an adolescent to experiment and get into trouble, it is beyond that. What about family background, lack of education, negative peer pressure, or parents who were never really there? IMO curiosity doesn’t cut it. One might be curious about how certain things work, but the decision to succumb to it is another issue all together. Sure, it might be one of the driving factors contributing to teen troubles, but surely there are more serious underlying causes such as that stemming from the type of upbringing, or even worst, the absence of it.. what is a house when you can’t call it a home?

I don’t think simply having no hobbies would spiral one to a life of no focus, and therefore would be compelled to try the bad and ugly.

Then again, it is not to say that having no hobbies would be the way to go. I myself, found a hobby in my interest in food and dining experience, although not particularly friendly to the waistline hehe..

At least we saw one thing eye to eye, that was when the host pointed out that the free time - which is virtually like NO TIME for Singaporean students – should make the most out of it, to utilize it wisely towards the betterment of oneself.

So boys and girls, laydees and gents, why not try something that would benefit society while enjoying every minute of it? Can’t we contribute to a better world, or at least the society we live in and still have fun chilling out with your buds? Why not…

Join a cycling club and organise a ride to help a charity in need?

Lend a hand at the nearest mosque, temple, church or synagogue when they are short of volunteers?

Round up a group of friends and help organise an outing of a lifetime for the children of welfare?

Put that Martha Stewart cap on and go crazy with bakes and cakes to raise money for someone who very much needs it..

Invite friends and friends of friends as volunteers at meet-the-residents session, to understand and empathise your neighbours who are constantly beleaguered by problems, which makes you reflect and appreciate your life a lot more than before?

You don’t need to save the cheerleader to save the world (just HAD to say that).

So while im lying on my bed, switching through the channels 100 and 1 times over, don’t worry, I won’t be reaching for that tub of glue across the room for a sniffing session. Maybe a craft sale perhaps?

Are u single, David?

What a coincidence, I'm single too!! We have soo much in common!! hahahahaha....

But in all seriousness, David C. finally made his mark as THE artist that he is and will be when he's out in the market, with his haunting interpretation of Mariah Carey's Always be my Baby (see idol corner!). I mean, to take on classics and flipit-and-reverseit to something else is... something else! He took a risk with a popular Mariah Carey hit… and wowee did it pay off big time! Best thing is that there no comparing with the original, coz he made it his own. Who'd ever think of rocking out one of MC's songs the way he did. Now that’s a sign of a genuine artist. Now that MJ's out of idol, there's no fighting over who has the sexiest voice in idol history *:D blushes like mad!!*

It's not without a battle if not for the other, that is David A. In the results show, he pulled off a melinda doolittle by not choosing sides and sat in the middle, trying not to hurt anyone's feelings.. awwww!! It’s stressing times like this that calls for quick pick-me-ups… and cupcakes sure makes it all better!

It would be great if you can whip up cupcakes to call your own, but with little time to spare in the kitchen, using a pre-mix is totally forgivable! :D

The recipe is real simple and quick, and making them is effortless. Trust me when I say that it only takes a minute to cook! How does that work you ask?? Simply mix cupcake ingredients to make up the batter.
2. Spoon into minicups about halfway full and pop in the microwave oven for 1 min.
3. Meanwhile, prepare the frosting by creaming icing sugar, butter and vanilla essence. Add milk last and gradually, may need to add more to desired consistency.
4. Leave cupcakes cool before topping up with icing.

I separated the frosting into 3 batches to which I added different food colourings. To prevent from adding too much colour, use a toothpick to dip into the colouring and use this to mix it into the frosting.

With half of the batter remaining, I added in chocolate chips (get only the best!) and once cooked, topped them up with the chocolate buttercream frosting I made previously. You can do this if you find yourself with too much batter and icing at hand - store them in ziplocs and take them out whenever the need for cupcake calls!

chocolate cuppy cakes

And wala! Another post on donuts? Homer Simpson would be so proud of me hehe. Don’t say you didn’t expect it, coz the latest low-down (or down-low.. whichever side of the earth you’re at)… J.Co Donuts has finally hit Singapore shores! Yup, all the way from Batam, ferry-ride and all. And you know how determined Singaporeans can be, especially with their food, when you see throngs of uncles and aunties in the ferry ride back to Singapore, with more bags of boxes of donuts they can carry. Now that J.Co has opened its first shop cum café at Raffles City basement, expect to see them there.

You might have read it in the papers, or like me, observe a sudden scene of bright orange boxes lugged in awfully large plastic bags (ever noticed and wondered why they all come in orange boxes?), certainly not from Batam (or some say JB).

This box made its way into my home

Anywho, with Breadtalk buying over J.Co Donuts, faster than you know, outlets have made its way into KL and Singapore. I was obviously unaware of this until I noticed passersby with boxes of assumingly donuts in Raffles City. And boy did they lure the curious cat to the shop of sin… sinfully good-looking donuts!! Hastily but discreetly, I trailed those orange boxes in the attempt to hunt down the donut trove.

I tell you, the café couldn’t be glowing with any more brilliance. Lo and behold, there it was, the J.Co I knew. Even glow-wier was me, as I beamed and smiled sheepishly just so darn pleased with what was before me. Picture the smile of the cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland, only wider. And before you know it, I was in line all ready to order! Dang you pretty donuts!

Yup this is the one!

Must... refrain... from queing....

Shoot it's too late.

No way out but to the cashier.. my pocket's doomed for sure. Some thing’s gotta give… maybe it’s the waistline, but definitely not your money! Good stuff does come in friendly price tags! For $7, half a dozen of donuts are yours to devour, but with 1 dozen you get away with only $11.50. Now that’s a good deal. And for 2 dozen to feed your big hungry family and next-door neighbours? A mere $21. Ok J.CO ain’t foolin me to get more than I can chew, literally. Maybe next week.

Although feeling rather deceived into queuing and ordering impulsively, all was forgiven because boy, I was in for a treat!! (What people do for donuts :I)

(from top left):

Why Nuts?: coz im nuts over you!! It sure made this cat a tiny bit fatter! Heck yeah you know wht you're getting yourself into. So don’t go ard tryna sue our…” Ok so i get their point: not another "McDonalds and fat kids" episode. It’s hard to describe, but going back to same place knowing that you can rely on your favourites is a comforting feeling. Who can not love the crowd pleasers that is Szechuan and char siew chicken? Chunks of meat drenched in menacingly dark sauce…rule of thumb: more dark = more sedap.

Stepping into Seoul Garden after a 2-year quarantine made me appreciate the old flavours and relish the new, especially Coffee chicken. For real son! The taste? Like chicken with a subtle lingering taste of a good cuppa. The unusual (and slightly disturbing to some) combination is surprisingly good! Who knew coffee had a place alongside chicken. Or maybe it’s an acquired taste. Or as Shaf puts it, like kopiko.

Some funky flavours for Seoul Garden to consider

Putting aside piling assignments and pesky groupmates, being a student has its perks too. For the same buffet, a student is charged a mere $15 or so per head. Just be sure too arrive before the clock strikes half past four. That’s great value considering ala carte menus in most restaurants of par. Plus it’s a buffet you can loosen your buckle to; there’s just something about bbqs and eating without restrictions or control (think of a bbq gathering where you made at least 3 rounds around the bbq pit. My point exactly). On top of that, ready-to-go western food, sushi platters, chinese cuisine side dishes, and a dessert spread with new additions to boot.

The kueh-kueh are a real treat! The game was no stranger, having played it 1001 times before but yet still had ways to amuse us. Instruction: Find someone who fits the description in the box.

And it didn’t take us (Dimas, Fina, Haslindah, myself) half a second to match the person fitting this description:

And we chorused… “Mardiana!!” Yes it’s soo you.

I also found out that Fina’s the only girl among a gang of brothers, and that makes both of us. And that was probably what Munchy Donut did.

Before the idea of freshly served donuts and donut parlours hit the local food scene, there were donuts around to keep donut-lovers occupied until their next overseas trip to Krispy Kremes or Dunkin’ Donuts. These were usually pre-fried, pre-topped and delivered to supermarkets or 7-11 to be sold. They tasted just alright, but a donut right out of the oven would be swell.

And then there was Donut Factory, which initiated a nationwide craze over donuts and in no time, a swift cascade of several other donut shops, each competing with their own range of donuts and the quirkiest name one could imagine. They knew Singaporeans wanted their donuts, and heck, they’re giving it to us.

Good ol' rainbow sprinkle and white chocolate

Donuts on a stick!

With many new kids on the block, there was a familiar brand with the facelift that probably saved its life. And this is assuming it was the Munchy Donut during my secondary school days. And then the taste-testing began…

The donuts are actually more colourful than what you see (blame a chocolate lover for buying more chocolate donuts why don’t you!). What I love about Munchy Donuts is that the toppings stay moist because they’re usually snapped up even before the next batch comes in. The dough is soft and fluffy, more like soft bread than donut though.

Choz O’nutter and Choz O’cream are chocolate-topped donuts with peanut butter and custard filling respectively. The chocolate topping taste more semi-sweet than sweet, and the bittersweet chocoloate topping should be left for true dark chocolate fans to experience the “shiok” in O’shiok.

Smart advertising!

More sweeter versions are cinnamon-topped Silly-Mon (told’ja they came up with silly names, literally) and Typhoon Oreo, both with white-chocolate base and veeery sweet. And for the conservative tastebuds, try the old school strawberry and chocolate donuts with rainbow sprinkles and nuts or lightly glazed originals.

Unlikely marriage of green-tea flavoured white chocolate with red bean filling - Putting Green - shows that Munchy Donuts are clearly putting in the effort to explore other flavours, but I’d leave that for others to try for now. Putting aside the brave attempt, they do stay true to more traditional recipes. For the crowd who seek old favourites, this is one of them donut shops.

With shops at each end - Causeway Point and Tanjong Katong (opp. Tanjong Katong Girls’) and more opening soon, it’s difficult not to get some. All that and the vendor’s all too penny-pinching on the coconut shavings? It’s as good as eating steamed flour sometimes.

So there was really nothing special about putu piring, for me at least - until one day I bit into what soon became a staple on sunday mornings . And I thought, this is the one. I tell you, there’s no other that comes close to these babies (my mom and I decided to put it to the test and went on a putu piring tasting survey… What?? We just appreciate good food ok).

There were just so soft and fluffly, and won’t harden if you kept them for later. And don’t be surprised if it gets messy, the thick gooey gula melaka gets all over the place!

i'm totally feelin' the whole lotta fillin'..

Even seeps to the underside!

Not taking my word for it? Action speaks louder than words, and the long queues would say it all. What better publicity that a beeline of loyal customers… and those who just find it thrilling to queue up at the longest line (coz that would mean that there’s something good in store down the line - or free goodie bags and hello kitties).

A stream of customers demands efficient and fast service, and that they certainly have. Instead of the usual lonesome 1 tending to a stall, 4 now engages in their own ‘stations’ - one scoops the filling, the other steams it, take it out when its freakin hot and steamy and lastly packing 3 in a bundle… all that for good one dollar. Better yet, 10 cents off with a banquet card, y’all! heheh…

4 pairs of diligent hands at your service

Stuff in some more please, Uncle

Located just beside Darul Arqam (Muslim Convert Association) or across the road from Malay Village, the stall simply known as what it sells – Putu Piring makes up one of the stalls in Banquet at Haig Road. To a new phase of your lives blissfully together, Insyallah.

And oh, just for the record, the food didn’t disappoint ;)

Carousel at Scotts

This is the sight that awaits you as you enter Royal Plaza at Scotts:

The most enthralling and dreamy wedding reception venue every bride could ask for. (for the lack of a better word :p)

Ambience was definitely one of the highlights in Carousel, the place partitioned into several dining areas with its own name and décor; The State room for functions and gatherings, the serene setting of the Verandah, the bright-burst of sunshine in the Terrace and the Living room for casual dining.

The Verandah

Pretty neat decor

The Japanese station offered the usual fare. And not forgetting the chocolate fountain, with accompanying sticks of fruits to coat (or multi-coat for me hehe). Western desserts were balanced with a fair share of local kuehs and puddings.

Sweets for my sweet

Chocolate & rasberry mousse, brownies, fruit tart and french pattisierie

It's nice to eat when it's nice to look at

Glowing hot scones!

Spot FD... Pleasant in that the place was cosy & welcoming, and customer service was tops. Pleasant also to the extent of blandness. The food averaged out decent and palatable but didn’t really make me come for thirdths. But seconds I did hehe.

But hey, it was high tea. Don’t expect a glorious spread of dense food aimed to burst your belly. Food at this hour is meant to be light, doi. But we were famished. Oh well.

But judging from Dimas’ rave reviews on lunch – roast lamb, whip-on-the-spot pasta, cheescakes, belgium waffles… shots of desserts?! You definitely got me there. Expect more ‘station kitchens’ offering a bigger food spread of international sorts.

For those keen to give it a try, be sure to make reservations. Turn-outs are usually high owing to it being Halal and a hot-spot for teachers, especially on half-days (I kid not!). And be sure to make it for lunch or dinner to not miss on the good stuff, which I’m sure I will soon.

* * *

CAROUSEL

Royal Plaza On Scotts

25 Scotts Road S228220

Tel: 6589-7799

Buffet hours: Lunch is 12.00 to 2pm; high tea is 3.30 to 5.30pm; dinner is 6.30 to 10.30pm; supper is 11pm to 4am.

Ayam Penyet Surabaya

Next stop on my list of makan places tried and tested is an Indonesian restaurant located somewhere in the glitzy wondershopping fashion street that is Orchard Road. Just that it’s neither one of them upmarket dining places nor the most chic of restaurants.

Located in the humble but popular shopping mall to foreigners and bargain-hunters, Resto Surabaya at Lucky Plaza has my thumbs up for authentic Indonesian fare.

It’s about time really, to get a taste of the much talked about Javanese dish that has made headlines and lured many celebrities (Sheila on 7, Peterpan, tinkerbelle?). Yes, all the hype surrounding their signature dish - Ayam Penyet Kremes.

And surely enough, the Ayam Penyet did not fail to deliver. Translated loosely as “smashed” chicken, this suggests actions of hammering, only to loosen the meat from the bones. The result? One tasty Ayam Penyet. Tender and moist meat, crispy skin with no hints of sogginess – Sure chases away the guilt of eating fried chicken! The dish also includes a generous serving of rice with fried tempe (fermented soybeans), tahu and great-tasting sambal thrown in for good measure.

So what really sets apart Resto Surabaya’s Ayam Penyet from the rest? I would think that the secret lies in the chili paste aka sambal. Variations to the sambal (in the attempt to cater to the local tastebuds) usually render them sweeter than the original. This restaurant however values the authenticity of Javanese cuisine and has fortunately conserved its distinctive flavour. The sambal maintains the tart taste with a good dose of spicy; definitely one that may scorch the unseasoned tongue and leave others wanting more.

Other appetizing dishes include Pecel Sayur - vegetables with “assam” and peanuts and Cah Kangkung or stir-fried kangkung, with the freshness of the vegetable preserved to the crisp. You’d need to try the rest to know how they'd fare now, wouldn’t you :)

All good things shouldn’t have to carry hefty price tag and this eatery very much understands this. Dishes are reasonably priced at hawker rates, probably owing to the rather confined and crammed space allocated for the restaurant.

You may have your own favourite Ayam Penyet eatery serving Indonesian food alike. In Lucky Plaza itself, outlets such as Ayam Penyet Ria and Ayam Bakar Ojoli have their own fair share of loyal customers. Not forgetting the most raved (as mentioned in a newspaper review) Changi Village Ayam Penyet Bistari, known to have modified their sambal to the likes of many.

Who knows, I might just change my mind on the best-tasting Ayam Penyet meal as I survey from store to store (speaking of which, there is this one restaurant around the corner – Waerong Penyet at Marine Parade opened and run by the famous Indon brothers. Hmm sounds like a hearty lunch to me :p). So far though, Resto Surabaya proves to be my personal fave. At the end of the day, you just gotta appreciate the food you're blessed with.

It may not be a Kintamani or Kartini in ambiance or location, but really, who gives a hoot when you’re dining on good food?

Resto Surabaya
Lucky Plaza #02-63/64
304 Orchard road Singapore 238863
Operating Hours: 1100 -2100hr
Tel: 6732 1803

Stop and smell the muffins...

So it’s been ages/eons/foreva since my last entry and it’s about time I put the kick back into this joint! At Gelare, signs scream of waffles going at half the original price… which of course means, being able to enjoy good food without having to worry about ripping a hole in your pocket.

Really, who could resist freshly-baked waffles with a friendly price tag? By George, have yourself 2 shares while you’re at it, 2-for-1 special okay! Yes, you can tell I was born and bred here.

Why stop there? Top your purchase with a selection of ice-cream of your whim & fancy, and you’re set to have a utensil-licking good time.

But be warned, only attempt to tackle giganormous waffle on empty stomach because chances are, you won’t have much space for the whole thing and end up stuffing in half, which is really, no difference from buying it on any other day.

Bite into my chocolate volcano… an eruption of chocolatey goodness!

Or keep it plain and simple… with coffee and syrup of maple.

I don’t know about you, but waffles to me are the kind of comfort food you’d retreat to for a quick pick-me-up or just that boost of cheer you needed. The aroma of freshly-baked lot sets you in wistful daydream as you cozy up in its warmth and comfort, only to find yourself reminiscing on yesteryears.

When the closest you can get to A&W waffles here is by mere daydream, Gelare might just be the next best place to put an end to that pining for waffles… on Tuesdays at least.

Of Cakes, Cream & Cheese

Milk & dark chocolate are undeniable favourites to many, evidence being the myriad of such cakes available in whole sorts of varieties. Thick in taste but can come off a tad dry.

Chocolate chip walnut: Loads of walnut & chocolate chips chunks in heaps of cream.

Chocolate indulgence: Elegant mix of milk & white chocolate within a blanket of semi-sweet fudge.

Chocolate banana: Pretty much similar to chocolate indulgence, of chunky bananas instead.

Apple Crumble: Another lovely harmony of taste & texture.

Marble Cheese: Base of oats and graham crackers. Because it’s served warm, the chocolate melts oh-so lusciously, making each bite just so heavenly…

Other picks: Lemon cheese, Marble cheese, Classic cheese,

Apple Crumble cheese, Chocolate marshmallow, Royal Chocolate

Pictures taken from Secret Recipe homepage

Secret Crush (part II)

The eatery also serves some appetizing western cuisine alongside a menu of Asian fusion dishes such as the Tom Yam spaghetti and Japanese noodles. The former sounds questionable, so kudos to the bold one who dares to take up that challenge!

Despite the ample choice of eats, I never fail to fall on yet again (and again) on regular fish n’ chips, all 2 of them on a plate (why have one slab-o-fish when you can have 2?). I reckon it lies in the golden batter that gives it that uniquely fresh and firm bite, accompanied with sweet tartar unlike the rest. Either that or I totally dig fish :p

That would mean that Mardiana really loves her chicken too, fried that is. Moi is to fish, Mardi is to chicken - And at SR, her staple is none other that Cordon Bleu, chicken ham wrapped within chicken chop stuffed with cheesy goodness… all hot-melting fromage. There, I just said the magic word.

Unfortunately pictures were not taken on one too many occasions, and the pictures you see were taken from a recent unplanned linner (lunch + dinner) with Mardiana and her guy, Eddie, after braving the crowds at the PC show. A very much indulgent and well-deserved dinner – I mean linner.

Paris Brest - Excuse my French!

Bossoms from the Eiffel Tower?? Naw, it's just an embarassingly-sounding pastry from Delifrance (but i'm sure the guys wouldn't mind the former, no?)

As usual my sweet tooth craved for some sweet bites so I headed down to Delifrance for some needed pastry lovin'. A new item on the menu (so I presume), I decided to give my curious tastebuds a try at it.

I know it's kinda childish and immature to blush over such silly things but just imagine asking for women's assets... not just any kind, the ones from Parrris while you're at it! I did however managed to mumble it out, although rather sheepishly.

One Paris brest, madame. Think kinder bueno, in a cream puff sorta way.

Next time round, I’ll just stick to point-and-order.

Surf's up!: Aussie Reefs on S'pore shores

I got to know of this place when it was featured on the first season of Suria Segar. The owner was said to have flown all the way to the land of Down Under to learn the skills of serving up some awesome fish n’ chips. If you gotta sell good fish n’ chips, might as well learn from the best right?

At $5.80, you get a regular size fish fillet (picture) with straight-cut fries & a side serving of coleslaw. Upgrade to a larger portion at an additional $1++ (almost 40% more fish).

Didn't really fancy the coleslaw but the fish was really something! You can tell they use fresh fish and not those packed-for-days-chucked-into-the-freezer kind that’ll just turn out fishy (du-uh their fishies aren’t they?). The fish fillet was thick and tender, and it’s batter nicely crisp, & that’s because they only throw it in the fry up upon order. Complementing it is the tangy yet sweet tartar sauce that got me digging for more from mom’s :) Fries could be less soggy but I ain’t complainin’.

Besides this all-time favourite, the menu also offers calamari rings and other fried seafood critters.

Considering that I finished my fries for the first time, this dish is worth the try. If you have to have just one card in your wallet, let it be banquet's. At $3 per annum, you get 10% off of any purchase (unless otherwise stated) which is so worth it if you’re a regular diner. You can’t go wrong at banquet – good food at hawker rates at the comfort of air-conditioned setting!

Aussie Reefs @ Banquet, Raffles Hospital
585 North Bridge Road
#01-02/03
Singapore 188770

Vinco, The (D'oh!)nut Parlour: They shop, we chomp.

A shopping bliss for shoppers, a great food stop for me and girlfriends. Having gone to vivocity a couple of times, we came to a conclusion that since there’s not much shopping for us to do there (Dorothy Perkins, Gap, whatzissname? Fuhgedabouddit.), we decided to make it our destination for good bites with Bianco/Bianca, Ben & his friend Jerry.

Along the row of restaurants and eats, stands a small humble donut parlour tucked neatly between flanking stores, that if you happen to blink for a second, you might just miss it (ok so it’s not that tiny).

Vinco queues are pretty decent compared to rival store Donut Factory, so there’s no need to sport comfy wear and good sturdy shoes to stand the long waiting hours (so i heard) as that at Donut Factory.

Despite the low customer count, the donuts are actually quite good. Unlike the typical dense doughnuts like the ones you get from Dunkin Donuts, Vinco offers rather light and soft, chewy donuts that almost taste, dare I say, healthy! (all the more to gobble down hehe). It came across as really good soft fried (whaddaya expect?) bread with an assortment of toppings slapped on top. Maybe, just maybe, it’s this signature taste that makes Vinco lovers (us included) come back for more.

Especially so when their doughnuts come straight right out of the fry & onto the serving trays, steaming hot.

First impression got us buying Mont Cherie, chocolate delight, Mochiatto (white chocolate mocha), Sweety Cheese & Sweet Sensation (dark chocolate with coconuts shavings).

Chocolate delight was an absolute delight! Hey, anything with chocolate is good enough for me :) Mon cherie tasted like typical bread with jam, mochiatto came off too powerful with the mocha and sweety cheese was a tad too sweet and cheesy for me. Mardiana however swears by it, claiming it as the best taste she’s ever, well.. tasted. I know that because she actually got high while stuffing 2 down. I kid not.

We came back for more, and as you can see one was craving for choc and the other cheese :p gosh. I settled for a different taste this time round, trying my hands on Mighty almond (white choc with duh, almonds). Pretty good, a wise choice for white choc fans.

There’s another doughnut shop within the vicinity but for now, these donuts have captured our hearts (or tummies rather), long enough for us to patron Vinco for a while. Or rather, Bianco as someone puts it :p This ain’t no character from some Spanish novella, sista.

Wanna have a glimpse of more fergilicious flavours? Check out the website.

You know you wanna!

Best brownies

Brownies have always sat on top of my list of comfort foods, although I must admit, a really good one is hard to come by. Not surprisingly, its moist and dark exterior is often misleading – anything that looks that drop-dead gorgeous to the eyes should translate pretty well on the palette. Or does it..?

So, what makes a good brownie? In my dictionary of best brownies, texture is everything. It’s gotta be 3 things – dense, moist & fudgy. Anything 'open' is chocolate moist cake, anything lighter is chocolate sponge cake, anything crumbly is uh... something else other than.

But with myriad variations spawning off the original recipe, one can never be to sure how a real brownie should taste like. Which is why I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to sinking my teeth into store-bought brownies.

So what’s a hungry gal to do when her sweet tooth craves for a sweet bite?
Search for the best in town of course!

> > >

Breeks: 2 words – Aye Caramba! This joint’s brownie sure packs one helluva punch! It’s so dense, more so chocolatey, it’s good.

You can ask for it be served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (which in my opinion, is a MUST) to sit perfectly on your warm American brownie. Also an option is the sauce, with a choice of chocolate or expresso (with coffee beans). For moi, expresso’s the way to go. The bitter tang just adds another pow! to the already tantalized tastebuds.

(Anybody knows whether they do delivery??)

Mac café: Surprisingly good, although awfully sinful! Rather generous with the ganache topping above a light yet moist chocolate cake layer. Actually quite delightful and best eaten hot. I’m lovin’ it already!

Café Galilee: Not the worst, neither the best. Rather cakey and dry for my liking. But what the hey, that’s just me. You might just like it. Although I have to commend their presentation, it was top class ya’ll!
(p/s: It’s the brownie in the header. To the left, to the left. Pretty neat, aye?)

Coffee Bean: Yaoza! Have you seen a brownie that hee-yuge before? It is even legal? That’s one hunka chunky brownie, and a lip-smacking one too! This one’s all the way from Boston, packed with chewy walnuts. Pop it into the microwave, slap on some-o-dat ice cream and wala! One damp and dark killer brownie. Is this what I’ve been missing out on all these years? I think so!

Secret recipe: It should definitely not be a secret because this brownie is delish! I said it once, I’ll say it again. Brownie and vanilla ice cream, a match made in brownie heaven. They’re like 2 and 2! Oprah & Gayle! Brad & Jen! ... wait a second, Brad & Jen?

Yes, like Brad and Jen, it didn't quite work out due to irreconcilable differences (whatever. Jen, you're still my favourite, sweetheart). This brownie is comparable to that of Mac’s (good btw) but sadly takes a backseat in the ice cream department. The less-than premium ice cream melts too fast, becomes vanilla shake before I can say *treat me to a brownie!* -- hmm where did that come from ;p

Until they do decide to splurge on better vanilla ice-cream, I won’t be screamin’ for their ice-cream. Just kidding. I still would actually. I love the combo that much :)

* * *

Well there you have it, my personal faves from Breeks and Coffee Bean. For now that’s the end of settling brownie points (pun very intended) but definitely not the search for it.

MNFD? Brownie Factory, Starbucks perhaps? No, DEFINITELY.

For the love of food

After much anticipation (mostly from myself), my blog – dedicated to my love (or rather weakness) of food – is finally up & running! Never did I think I’d start a blog, but witnessing the huge phenomenon it has become and its power in reaching the masses has convinced me to jump into the bandwagon myself (and also because all my friends are doing it :p). Oh well, if you can’t beat em, join em!

If I had to have one, why not totally devote it on food? Sweet.

You know you have a soft spot for food when you take note of shows like coffee talks and hawker woks, sweets for my sweets, makan places lost and found, and you find yourself salivating uncontrollably while tuning into Nigella Lawson – her cooks and desserts people! Tsk tsk. And it totally bums you out when you miss a segment of food-gorging pleasure, let alone an entire episode! I can even admit to watching Suria Segar on Sunday mornings just waiting anxiously for that one segment. You guessed it.

In the quest to hunt down good food to satisfy my gastronomic senses, wouldn’t it be just swell if I could share my food ventures on a much wider platform beyond my circle of close friends -- whom by the way, may just have had handled enough of me recommending and proposing and bugging on the next dining places to hit.

And so my food blog (technologically speaking?) is born. Yes I’m always thinking of that next stop, that next bite, My Next Food Destination. I’m pretty sure there’s much more than just Swensons for that occasional splurge, or even really good hawker fare and cheap eats than the usuals. And don’t get me started on the sweet stuff.

Better yet, if you know of a place worth trying out, tell me about it! I’d be more than happy to try it out (depending on cash-on-hand). Even better if sponsored :D

So here’s embarking on many pleasurably food-tasting adventures to come. Cheers!

Feel the need to indulge?
No "pampering spa treatments", just chocopots for me & Nigella.
